Academic Advisor:  

An academic advisor is a member of the teaching staff responsible for guiding the student academically and advising them in choosing the courses they will register for in the most appropriate way.  

Importance of Academic Advising:  

Academic advising is considered a fundamental component of the educational process, as it provides significant support to the student throughout their academic journey in university life.  

Guiding and advising the student in selecting the most suitable courses for them is one of the key factors in helping the student adapt to university study and its requirements, and it is essential for achieving student success and excellence. Therefore, most higher education institutions have relied on the expertise of their teaching staff in advising and guiding their students in academic matters.  

Mechanism for Naming and Distributing Academic Advisors:  

An academic advisor is appointed in each college by a decision of the college council, which is then approved by the university council. At the beginning of each semester, students are distributed to academic advisors in each college according to the decision of the college council by the student affairs officer after informing the university administration.

Academic Advisor Duties:

- Providing academic advice and guiding the student in selecting the most suitable courses to register for each semester based on the student's semester and cumulative GPA.

- Familiarizing the student with the credit hour system and everything related to this academic system.

- Introducing the student to the study plan and the requirements for registering certain courses, which the student cannot register for before passing prerequisite courses.

- Informing the student of all procedures related to registration, course freeze, deferment, withdrawal, and the regulations governing them.

- Following up with the student and informing them of all decisions issued by the Ministry of Higher Education that concern them and are related to their academic path.

- Notifying the student of academic warnings according to the Ministry of Higher Education decisions and guiding the student to avoid receiving a warning or how to overcome it if it occurs.- Introducing the student to everything related to the academic system at the university and explaining the basic topics that concern the student, such as: credit hours, warnings, grades, grade point equivalent and letter equivalent, the semester GPA and cumulative GPA, and how they are calculated.

- Assisting struggling students in advancing and improving their academic level and encouraging and supporting outstanding students.
